Black Wasp 2012

The Giant Black Wasp

This summer the giant black wasp is back. It is a pretty thing, but sort of dangerous to be around. I don't want to find out the hard way, so I keep a great distance between us.

He Is Hiding
He didn't munch on anything, but just hung out in the tall stalk of irises. I love his beautiful blue wings when they are brightened up under the sun.

He Is Annoyed by Me
Yes, he was very annoyed with me following him everywhere, even when he thought he has hidden so well. I am a stubborn stalker, so sorry...big eyes fella!

Never thought I would say a wasp was beautiful, but you have opened my eyes to its iridescence ...

Really nice, sharp photos! I see these from time to time, and I love how the light reflects iridescent blue off their wings.

Beautiful shots, and I understand what you mean-I cannot imagine being on the receiving end of a sting from him is all that nice and wasps can still sting you if they are dead too. Thanks for sharing:)

Well at least he didn't get too annoyed with you. His blue wings are so pretty. Great macro shots Icy.

I was tracking a bumble bee yesterday with my camera and then I had second thoughts...like you...I don't want to learn the hard way how hurtful their stings can be. Good job on getting so close unscathed!!
